MDQPN 2006 Challenge "To Color or Not

                                  to Color"

When I approached this challenge I was struck by the idea of light and dark, not specifically color.  The movement of dark to light or light to dark and so this became my interpretation of the 2006 Challenge.  The pieced background shows the movement from light to dark or sky to ground. The vines show the need to search for light.  We all seek light in many forms in our lives just like vines stretching towards the sun.

Dimensions:  25" X 25" Dimensions: 35" X 47"
This quilt was the second in a series of quilts that have pieced backgrounds and appliquéd vines and leaves. It was machine pieced and hand appliquéd.  This quilt was exhibited at the New Jersey State Quilt Show as a part of the QPN Exhibit. This quilt is the latest installment in my series of pieced backgrounds and appliquéd vines and leaves.  This is the 4th quilt.  The 3rd one is in my parent's kitchen protecting the walls from banging doors. This quilt was also one of my first attempts to bead.  Beading is labor intensive but adds a lot of sparkle to the quilt. This quilt has been exhibited at Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, 2008.

Dimensions: 57" X 57" Dimensions: 44" X 78"
The quilt was a personal challenge.  The Triple Feather Star pattern is from Marsha McCloskey's Book, Feathered Star Book 1.  The appliquéd border is my own design.  The feathers in the center star are half square triangles that are 3/8" finished size.
This quilt has been exhibited at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in Hampton, VA, Paducah and Winterthur.
This quilt was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of my Grandparent's death. The pictures are from 1905 thru 1984.  There are pictures of both my grandparents as children, their college graduation pictures, their 1924 passport picture, and pictures from their 8 circumnavigations of the world. It is a blend of silks, batiks, and cottons.  It has be exhibited in Paducah, Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, Vermont (3rd place), and now  Houston.
